Course Details:

This training programme was specially prepared for those working in hospices and other settings that provide care for persons with terminal illnesses. It will therefore be of direct benefit to social workers, psychologists, members of the clergy, and counsellors whether new to this area or having some experience.

The premise of the resource is that when counselling the terminally ill the focus should be on the psychospirtual aspects of death and dying. Death anxiety is perceived to be the most critical issue for the dying person, not pain or suffering as is often believed to be the case. Furthermore, it is a notable phenomenon that during the period of dying there may be opportunities for growth and transformation that will greatly ease matters for the dying person.

Therefore, it is extremely important for the counsellor to realise that at this time empathy or understanding and caring are primary requisites to accomplish the counselling goals and for a satisfactory outcome both for the terminally ill person and the counsellor.
Dying is an intrinsic part of living and therefore engages the attention of all of us. The way we view death and the way of dying are individual matters for us all. For some, the focus is on the denying the reality of death, for others their lives are spent exploring and contemplating its meaning. Some people die easily while others struggle against its inevitability.

There are those who choose to go to their death alone and those who seek to share the experience and its meaning with others.
The key to successful counselling of the terminally ill is to find out exactly how the dying person wishes and is prepared to face death and then for the counsellor to facilitate that desire.
